Clayton’s Terry Hicks Leads NCAA Division III In Rushing

SALEM, VIRGINIA – Clayton, N.C. native Terry Hicks is having a record-setting senior season at Hampden-Sydney College, where he currently leads all NCAA Division III players in rushing.

Hicks, who lives in Clayton but attended Apex Friendship High School, rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns Saturday, Oct. 10 as Hampden-Sydney defeated Roanoke College 39-33 in Salem, Virginia.

It was the third straight 200-yard rushing game for Hicks, making him the first player in the 51-year history of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to accomplish the feat.

Through five games this season, Hicks has rushed for 971 yards on 148 carries, averaging 6.6 yards per attempt and 194.2 yards per game.

He has rushed for 760 yards and five touchdowns in just his last three games.

The streak began Sept. 19 when Hicks ran for a school-record 316 yards on 36 carries against the University of New England in Maine.

That performance broke a Hampden-Sydney record that had stood for 49 years.

Jimmy Ferguson had held the previous mark with 226 rushing yards against Liberty Baptist in 1977.

Hicks followed the record-setting performance with 227 yards and two touchdowns against Shenandoah on Oct. 3.

He was later named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Against Roanoke on Saturday, Hicks carried the ball a career-high 37 times and scored twice.

His first touchdown, a 17-yard run with 33 seconds remaining in the first half, helped Hampden-Sydney take a 22-17 lead into halftime.

Hicks scored again on a six-yard run with 6:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.

When Roanoke pulled within six points late in the game, Hampden-Sydney went back to Hicks. He picked up three first downs on the Tigers’ final possession, helping his team run out the clock and secure the victory.

The win improved Hampden-Sydney to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Hicks, a 2023 graduate of Apex Friendship High School, has also continued moving up Hampden-Sydney’s career record book.

He now has 2,927 career rushing yards, fifth-most in school history. His 30 career rushing touchdowns are tied for eighth.

Hicks has recorded 13 career games with at least 100 rushing yards.

Three of the five best single-game rushing performances in Hampden-Sydney history now belong to the Clayton running back — 316 yards, 227 yards and 217 yards, all recorded this season.

Hampden-Sydney returns home Saturday, Oct. 17 to face Guilford College during Homecoming weekend.
