Dispute Over Handicapped Parking Space Leads To Alleged Road Rage Incident

CLEVELAND COMMUNITY – A disagreement over a handicapped parking space reportedly escalated into a road rage incident that left a vehicle damaged and prompted an investigation by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred around 6:25 p.m. May 27 at a convenience store on Veterans Parkway near Interstate 40.

According to a sheriff’s report, a 37-year-old Knightdale man parked outside the business and entered the store. When he returned, he was confronted by an unidentified man who questioned why he had parked in a handicapped space without displaying a handicapped placard.

The encounter quickly turned into a verbal argument. The victim told deputies the other man threatened to shoot and kill him before both parties left the area.

A short time later, while traveling on Veterans Parkway, the Knightdale man said the suspect reappeared and sideswiped his vehicle.

The collision caused an estimated $2,500 in damage. No injuries were reported.

Investigators said the victim and suspect did not know one another and the confrontation appears to have been a random encounter.

The victim was unable to provide a detailed description of either the suspect or the vehicle involved. No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.

  1. Was the victim legally parked? This too has become an issue. The law says that your card is to be displayed. I in no way agree with people taking matters into their own hands but everyone knows that people park in handicap spots illegally with pride because the law is never anywhere to be seen these days. It takes a special kind of entitlement to make it harder on those who already have a hard enough time. If you want to be like a small percentage of those who obtained their card and don’t have trouble getting around and just want to park at the front, well then have your card visible like the law says.

  2. People with out a handicap license plate, or handicap placard park illegal in Johnston county all the time . What happens once you call law enforcement. Also, the parking violation has fines or penalties.Mandatory penalties.
