Doris Wallace Named Grand Marshal For Smithfield MLK Jr. Parade

SMITHFIELD — The NAACP Johnston County Branch will host the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Saturday, January 24, in downtown Smithfield. The parade, themed “Urgency Meets Legacy – Living the Dream Today,” begins at 11:00 a.m.

The parade route will travel along Market Street from Sixth Street to Second Street, uniting community members to honor the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Dr. King.

This year’s event will feature Doris Wallace as Grand Marshal and comedian Jay Derrell as Parade Master of Ceremonies. Organizers say the parade celebrates unity, reflection, and service while encouraging attendees to continue living Dr. King’s dream through action and engagement.

“The theme ‘Urgency Meets Legacy’ reminds us that Dr. King’s message remains just as relevant today as it was during the Civil Rights Movement.

Motorists should anticipate temporary traffic impacts in the downtown area before and during the event, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
