Driver Arrested After High Speed Chase

SMITHFIELD – A high speed chase that began in Wayne County ended in Johnston County, Sunday afternoon.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office began pursuing the driver of a red car. The chase continued into southern Johnston County. State troopers from Wayne and Johnston counties also joined the pursuit.

While traveling northbound on US 701 South of Four Oaks, the pursuit reportedly reached speeds of 110 miles per hour.

Stop sticks were deployed twice along US 701 deflating several tires on the speeding vehicle. The suspect refused to pull over.

The chase continued northbound on US 701, across Interstate 95, and onto US 301, and eventually into the Smithfield city limits, where the pursuit slowed to approximately 45 mph. At the intersection of US 301 (Brightleaf Boulevard) and US 70 (Market Street) the suspect struck the front of a small red SUV. The suspect was immediately detained.

A woman operating the SUV was not injured.

Smithfield Police were not involved with the pursuit but assisted with traffic control until the scene could be cleared.

We have reached out to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office to learn more about the reason for the chase and the name of the driver. We will update our story when we have more information.

Thank God the woman was not injured but I am unable to say the same about the person that was running from the law in total disregard for other people’s lives and those lives include LEOs, children and adults. The person running at those high speeds should have expired in the chase. Thank you to all the LEOs involved and we thank you for your service.
