PINE LEVEL – A man who reportedly stole a work truck from a Wayne County convenience store crashed the truck a few minutes later while fleeing from state troopers in Johnston County.

The owner of the truck briefly stopped at a convenience store Monday afternoon. When he exited, he saw someone driving off with his recently purchased vehicle.

A witness to theft told the owner of the stolen truck to “jump in” and the two began following the stolen pickup, as they used a cell phone to call authorities and update them on the location of the pickup.

A short time later, state troopers in Johnston County spotted the pickup near Princeton and gave chase. The pursuit did not last long.

The truck turned onto Country Store Road near Pine Level, drove into a ditch, struck a tree, then overturned.

The suspect driver, the only one in the stolen pickup, was transported to WakeMed for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He will face numerous charges.

Unfortunately, the work truck was totaled in the single vehicle accident.

  1. Shame for the truck but the driver who stole it should have lost a limb or two. He could have killed someone or a LEO. Good job to the truck owner and the person who drove him to keep this guy from getting away.
