FBI Investigating After Explosive Devices Carried To Fire Station

Local, state and federal authorities are investigating after an individual carried two items to a rural fire station Sunday afternoon. The items turned out to be explosive devices.

Around 2:00pm, a person carried the items to the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department in Wayne County saying they wanted to turn them over. The person placed the items at the entrance door to the fire station. Fire department personnel thought they devices were explosives and contacted the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Wayne County deputies responded and also notified the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team and the NC State Bureau of Investigation.

A robot was used to move the items to a safe location near the fire station. The items were then ‘rendered safe’ by the disposal team. Authorities said the devices were explosive in nature.

The FBI was notified and also asked to respond.

Wayne County Sheriff Major Richard Lewis said the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when available.
