Fleeing Driver Stops At Family Members Home, JCSO Says

SMITHFIELD – A late night chase ended when the driver stopped at a family members home, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said.

Garrett Thomas West, age 25, of N. Raiford Street, Selma faces multiple charges including fleeing to elude arrest, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a weapon of mass destruction, driving on a revoked license, expired registration, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.

On Feb. 16 at 11:09pm, a deputy sheriff attempted to stop a Ford Ranger pickup, displaying a license plate that expired in 2019, on US 70 Business near Swift Creek Road. The driver reportedly refused to stop for a blue light and siren, and continued traveling westbound on US 70 towards Clayton at speeds of 55 to 60 miles per hour.

The chase ended a short time later on Gordon Road when the driver turned into a private driveway and stopped behind the home of a relative.

During a search of the pickup, a 12 gauge shotgun, sawed-off bolt action rifle, assorted ammunition, marijuana grinder and bowl, and scales were located, according to a report.
