Former School Resource Officer And His Wife, Ex-Teacher, Appear Before Judge

A former Johnston County school resource officer and his wife, a former public school teacher, made their first appearance before a judge Monday morning in Smithfield. Michael Medlin was assigned as the school resource officer at Corinth Holders High, where his wife, Ami, was a family and consumer science teacher.

Michael and Ami Medlin were indicted January 23, 2023 by a Grand Jury on charges of taking indecent liberties with a student, first degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and sexual servitude involving the same victim, a former student at Corinth Holders High.

According to the indictments, the alleged offenses took place in 2015 and 2016.

Sheriff Steve Bizzell fired Deputy Medlin in May 2022 following an internal investigation after the allegations against the couple were first reported. Ami Medlin was suspended by Johnston County Public Schools that same month, and later resigned from her position.

The NC SBI investigated the allegations against the couple at the request of the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office.

Following their first appearance in court, Michael and Ami Medlin were held under $50,000 secured bonds each at the Johnston County Jail. As of Monday afternoon, the couple was still behind bars.
