Hazmat Crews Respond After Diesel Spill From Tanker Crash

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A crash involving two commercial trucks Thursday morning shut down Brogden Road, sent one driver to the hospital, and triggered a hazardous materials response after diesel fuel spilled from a punctured cargo tank.

The collision occurred around 9:16 a.m. on Brogden Road about 8 miles east of Smithfield. Trooper said the dump truck was eastbound and a fuel truck was traveling westbound.

Troopers said the driver of the dump truck traveled onto the right shoulder of the road, lost control, overcorrected, crossed the centerline and struck the side of an oncoming tanker truck.

The impact punctured the tanker’s cargo tank, causing diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway and into a nearby ditch. The spill was eventually contained.

The driver of the tanker, Danny Ray Phillips, was transported to a hospital for treatment. He was reported to be in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the dump truck was identified as Martin Gonzalez Javier.

Hazardous Materials Response personnel and N.C. Department of Transportation crews responded to the scene to assist with cleanup efforts.

Officials expected Brogden Road to reopen around 2:00 p.m.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation.

  1. These dump trucks need to be checked by the police be they are continuously distracted. I live by the quarry and the drivers are always driving too fast, reckless, and constantly on their cell phones. These trucks are dangerous and these drivers need to stop playing with peoples lives

  2. Just curious…does Martin Gonzalez Javier speak English, can he read road signs, and was he on his cell phone at the time of impact?
