Head-On Crash With Cement Truck Leaves One Dead, One Critically Injured

BENSON, N.C. — A 49-year-old man died Friday morning following a head-on collision with a cement truck on U.S. 301 just north of Benson, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 7:10 a.m. on U.S. 301 near the Interstate 40 overpass.
Troopers said a preliminary investigation determined a northbound 2017 GMC Terrain crossed the centerline into the southbound lanes and collided head-on with a southbound 2022 Western Star cement truck.

Following the impact, the cement truck traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch and became engulfed in flames.
The GMC Terrain traveled off the left side of the highway and came to rest on the northbound shoulder.
The driver of the GMC, Draper Leroy Scott, 49, of Lumberton, N.C. was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.

The driver of the cement truck, Raymond Miles, 43, of Leland, N.C. was also transported to WakeMed with life-threatening injuries.
According to the Highway Patrol, Scott was wearing a seat belt. Troopers were unable to determine whether Miles was restrained because of the extensive fire damage to the cement truck.
Investigators said speed and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the collision. Troopers said Scott’s vehicle crossed the centerline and was traveling left of center immediately before the crash. No contributing factors were identified for the driver of the cement truck.

Because the crash involved a commercial motor vehicle, members of the Highway Patrol’s Motor Carrier Enforcement Unit responded to perform an inspection of the cement truck.
The collision forced the closure of U.S. 301 for several hours as crews investigated the crash and worked to recover the heavily damaged cement truck.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Another driver, no alcohol, in daylight and clear weather, randomly crosses the center line for no stated reason and causes a serious accident. It’s past time to do something about this.
JoCo Report did not give a reason. I’m sure there is a reason, unfortunately the person able to give the reason did not survive the crash. What exactly do you proposed be done, as long as there are motorist on the road there will be accidents. Some avoidable, some not so much.
It’s easier to attack people who had a few drinks… there are way more wrecks Involving sober people than there is otherwise… people only want to highlight one and not the other.
When you say past time to do something, what exactly is it you would do.. horse and carriage lol.
It is not a cement truck. Cement is a powder, it is a concrete truck.
