SMITHFIELD, N.C. – Town officials and residents gathered April 1 for the dedication of a new landmark sign recognizing the historic Greytown community.

The ceremony took place at the corner of U.S. 70 Business West and Hill Street, where the new sign now stands as a visible acknowledgment of one of Smithfield’s longstanding neighborhoods.

Greytown’s history dates back to at least 1891, as reflected in early land plats that show the area laid out into small residential lots. Over time, the community developed into a close-knit neighborhood with deep cultural and religious roots. Historical documents highlight the presence of institutions such as Burning Bush Holiness Tabernacle, established in the mid-20th century, which played a central role in community life.

Archival references also show Greytown appearing in local newspaper mentions as early as 1917 and 1919, pointing to its long-standing identity within the broader Smithfield area.

Town leaders said the new sign replaces an older marker and is part of an ongoing effort to preserve and recognize the heritage of Smithfield’s historic communities. The dedication brought together local officials, including town council members Doris Wallace and Dr. Gettys Cohen Jr., as well as residents with generational ties to the area.

The event served not only as a ribbon-cutting, but also as a moment of reflection on Greytown’s enduring legacy.
