I-40 Trash Pile Finally Cleared

JOHNSTON COUNTY — A large, foul-smelling pile of garbage that sat in the middle of Interstate 40 for a week was finally removed Thursday, ending days of complaints from frustrated drivers.

The debris had been en route from the Triangle area to a contracted landfill in eastern North Carolina when the truck hauling it crashed and overturned last Thursday, Nov. 13. The wreck left a significant amount of waste scattered near mile marker 316.

Officials said the trucking company did not carry enough insurance to cover the cleanup. As a result, Phillip’s Towing and Recovery stepped in to remove the trash and re-seed the roadside area to meet Department of Transportation standards — all at the company’s expense.

During the cleanup, I-40 eastbound was reduced to one lane, creating long backups of slow-moving traffic through much of the morning and part of the afternoon.

The damaged guardrail was replaced Wednesday, and crews worked to finish the cleanup before the Thursday evening rush hour.

  1. funny that the people that created this trash complain about it…. this bag was once in your kitchen trash can but you dissown it now🤡🤣🤡🤣

    • Uh yeah, we put it where it was supposed to go, and it was the trash collector’s job to take it to where it should go from there (not in the middle of the interstate). According to your logic, if they decided to dump it in front of your front door you can’t get mad because it’s yours right.

      • How did they not have enough insurance to cover the cleanup? Every trucking company is supposed to have a million dollar policy on every truck minimum. Looks like the dot needs to come in and do an audit.
