JCC’s Diesel and Heavy Equipment students receive life-changing awards at Tools for Techs event
SMITHFIELD – Johnston Community College’s Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology students recently attended a Tools for Techs event where industry partners awarded roughly $37,000 in tools and scholarships.
The North Carolina Transportation Maintenance Council awarded four $500 scholarships to Gabriel Genova (Willow Spring), Daniel Genova (Willow Spring), Lawrence Wilson (Hertford), and Richard Thrash (Four Oaks).
Two other $500 scholarships were awarded by Sunbelt Rentals and the Bob Slaughter Memorial Scholarship Fund to Raphyel Maclas-Sanchez (Coats) and Christian Pittman (Four Oaks), respectively.
MHC Kenworth handed out a $1500.00 tool scholarship to Brian Ayala-Lemus of Goldsboro.
More than a dozen industry partners donated fully loaded tool carts with some individual boxes valued at $6,000.00.
The industry representatives also set up vendor booths to allow students to speak with them in regards to the company and employment opportunities.
“These gifts really make a difference in our students’ lives and allow them to continue their studies without worrying about the cost of certain materials,” says instructor Jonathan Hartley.
“We are grateful to everyone who made the Tools for Techs event possible,” Hartley adds.

A perfect example of why we DONT need publicly controlled education. We need to let private business take care of it — not burden the taxpayers with SOCALIST-style eduction funding.
