Johnston Commissioners Approve $250,000 To Assist With Tuition At JCC For 2022 High School Graduates

SMITHFIELD – Johnston Community College and Johnston County Commissioners have announced the formation of the The JoCo Commissioners Promise Program which will cover the cost of tuition for 2022 high school graduates during the 2022-23 school year. The county approved the use of $250,000 to help fund the initiative.

The JoCo Commissioners Promise Program will bridge the gap for any tuition not covered by the Longleaf Commitment grant, federal Pell grants or other state funds. Students will only be responsible for the costs of textbooks, supplies, and program-specific fees.

“We would like to thank the Johnston County commissioners for their commitment to JCC. Investments in our college are investments in the local economy,” said Dr. Kenneth A. Boham, interim president of JCC.

“We are grateful for our partnership with this community. This promise program is essential to positioning the college’s service,” Dr. Boham added.

“The Board of Commissioners places a great value on its investment in education,” says Johnston County Commissioners Chairman, Butch Lawter.

“By supporting this promise program, we hope to create a clearer path for graduating seniors to enter into the local workforce as we bolster our commitment to Johnston Community College,” Lawter adds.

Students must meet eligibility requirements, apply to JCC, and fill out their FAFSA forms to qualify. Registration for the fall semester ends August 12, 2022. For details, visit: https://www.johnstoncc.edu/jocopromiseprogram.

  1. Why aren’t these loans to the students? Why is the county giving grants for this? They are out of bounds on this–it is NOT CONSTITUTIONAL .

    • It’s only covering the difference between what a student receives from the longleaf, pell or other federal and state grants.

  2. Zero merit requirements for this. Just handing out money, which will drive up college tuition costs.

    • There are zero requirements for any of the other grants that are mentioned in the article as well.

  3. What is the answer to correcting this? I am not saying I disagree with Brett, Jean or Michael. What would it be if it was an openly majority board of Abortion Mill Democrats that voted in multi millions of dollars with a drastic property tax increase? Folks, these people that get elected loses thier sense of what if it was thier money when faced with millions on top of millions of dollars in reserves. Our National Debt is trillions of dollars and their is no one with enough of education to comprehend how many hundreds of millions it takes to make trillions of dollars deficit? If we can’t comprehend the realistic weight of trillions of dollars dificit? How can anyone in goverment honestly say they are concerned about your and our tax dollars being wasted?

    • “What is the answer to correcting this?”

And Article V Convention of States would be a nice start to clean up from the top down. 19 States have called, 15 more to go. IMO, it’s the only peaceful and Constitutional solution left.

  4. Once again, the GOP inches closer to Socialism. If I wanted my country to pay for free college for it’s citizens, I would have moved to some Socialist “paradise” like Norway or Denmark!

Enough with the “let the government pay for everything” attitude! People need to pay their own way!

    • I don’t think this is about paying for everything. It’s about helping people get jobs to better society. This is heating and air, plumbing, beauticians..services we all need. it’s a hand up to those who college isn’t an option.

  5. the ” government” same families that pirated these lands and enslved everone STILL RUNS THE SHOW. this is why you bicker all day over left and right politics. because you can’t understand symbols or bloodlines. those kids in that pic dont even speak for anyone I know. The county is run by criminals.

  6. You’re getting upset about something with the potential of having positive returns to your community. An educated workforce means higher income and more tax money for the area. That translates to better public facilities.

Y’all have GOT to move forward.
