Johnston County Among 81 Counties Where Open Burning Ban Is Lifted

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Residents in Johnston County can once again burn outdoors, as state officials lifted a weeks-long ban on open burning for most of North Carolina on Sunday.

The North Carolina Forest Service announced the ban was lifted for 81 counties effective Sunday, May 3 following recent rainfall that helped ease dangerous fire conditions. Johnston County is among those where restrictions have now been removed.

The statewide burn ban had been in place since March 28 due to heightened wildfire risk fueled by dry conditions across much of the state.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said the rain brought much-needed relief but warned that wildfire season is far from over.

“The recent rainfall has provided some relief and has moderated fire danger enough for us to lift the ban on open burning in 81 counties,” Troxler said. “However, we’re still in the thick of spring wildfire season when conditions can change quickly.”

Even with the ban lifted in Johnston County, residents are urged to use caution when burning yard debris or other materials. A valid burn permit is still required, and officials recommend having water and tools on hand while never leaving a fire unattended.

Not all counties are in the clear. The burn ban remains in effect for 19 counties, primarily in the central and western parts of the state, where drought conditions persist and fire risk remains elevated.

Officials also noted that local rules can still apply. Fires within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling may still be restricted, and local fire marshals have the authority to issue additional burn bans if conditions warrant.

With drought conditions lingering in parts of North Carolina, officials are continuing to stress caution — even in counties like Johnston where the ban has been lifted.

Residents with questions about safe burning practices are encouraged to contact their county ranger’s office for guidance.
