A road connection to U.S. 70 will permanently close
WILSON’S MILLS – On Thursday, Turnage Road will no longer connect with U.S. 70 in Johnston County.
The N.C. Department of Transportation contractor upgrading the highway in Wilson’s Mills will permanently close Turnage Road’s access to U.S. 70. When this change is made Aug. 17, drivers will no longer be able to go from U.S. 70 onto Turnage Road, or vice versa.
Instead, drivers will use Wilson’s Mills Road to reach U.S. 70. Turnage Road will become a dead-end near the highway.
For now, the other side of this same intersection, which becomes Bear Farm Road, will remain connected to the highway while the contractor finishes constructing a service road. Eventually, Bear Farm Road will also lose direct access to U.S. 70.
The contractor is converting two conventional intersections – with Swift Creek Road and Wilson’s Mills Road – into interchanges with bridges, ramps and loops as part of the future Interstate 42 corridor. Construction began in 2021, and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2024.
