Johnston County Man Serving Life Sentence Found Dead In Prison Cell

WINDSOR – A Johnston County man serving a life sentence for murder was found dead in his prison cell.  Jeffrey A. Jacobs of Clayton was found unresponsive in his cell at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, NC around 6:18am Wednesday.  Prison first responders performed lifesaving measures until local paramedics arrived but they could not save his life.

Law enforcement is investigating the death. The NC Department of Public Safety said they are also conducting their own investigation. Officials believe his death was a suicide.

Jacobs, age 43, was serving life in prison for the April 2001 shooting death of Timothy Johnson, 24, of Clayton. Johnson was stopped for a stoplight on Highway 301 at US 70 in Selma when a motorcycle and car pulled up beside his vehicle and opened fire. Johnson was struck in the neck and later died at the hospital.

Jeffrey Jacobs, who was 22 at the time, was captured in October 2001 during a random license checkpoint set up by the State Highway Patrol in Johnston County.

Jacobs was one of four suspects charged by Selma Police in 2001 for Timothy Johnson’s murder.
