Johnston County Under Winter Storm Warning Through Monday Afternoon

SMITHFIELD — Johnston County is under a Winter Storm Warning from Saturday afternoon through Monday afternoon, as forecasters warn of significant ice accumulation that could bring major impacts across the county.

County officials say the combination of sleet, freezing rain, and bitter cold temperatures could lead to power outages, falling trees, hazardous travel conditions, and disruptions to infrastructure. In response, Johnston County Government will activate its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at noon on Saturday and open multiple White Flag shelters in partnership with local organizations.

Residents across Johnston County were already busy Friday preparing for the storm, topping off fuel in vehicles, filling gas cans for generators, refilling propane tanks, and stocking up on groceries and emergency supplies ahead of the anticipated impacts.

What to Expect

According to the National Weather Service, sleet and freezing rain are expected to be the primary precipitation types beginning Saturday night and continuing through Sunday, with ice accumulation posing the greatest threat. Roads — especially bridges and overpasses — are expected to become slick and dangerous.

Forecasters also warn that falling tree limbs and power lines could lead to scattered to widespread power outages, potentially lasting into early next week. Even after precipitation ends, black ice may remain a concern for several nights.

Adding to the danger, bitterly cold air is expected early next week, with single-digit low temperatures Monday night and daytime highs only in the 20s and 30s.
