Justin Vause Named Selma Police Chief

SELMA, N.C. – Justin Vause has been named Chief of Police for the Town of Selma, bringing nearly two decades of experience across all areas of public safety and a lifelong connection to the community he is now honored to serve in this role.
Born and raised in Selma, Chief Vause steps into this position with a deep sense of responsibility—not just as a law enforcement leader, but as someone who has grown up alongside the people and families that make this town what it is.
“Selma is home to me in every sense of the word,” Vause said. “The people here helped shape who I am, and I don’t take that lightly. It means something to be able to give back and serve this community in this way.”
Over the course of his career, Vause has served in multiple roles across public safety, including emergency medical services, fire service, and law enforcement. From answering 911 calls and providing medical care, to working on the front lines of patrol and leading complex criminal investigations, his experience has been built through every level of service.
That background has shaped his belief that effective policing starts with people—both within the department and throughout the community.
“This job is about people,” he said. “It’s about taking care of our officers so they can take care of this community, and it’s about building relationships that are based on trust, respect, and consistency.”
As Chief, Vause emphasized that the department will operate with a clear commitment to Excellence, Fairness, Equality, and Compassion, not just as values, but as a daily standard for how officers serve the public.
“We’re going to treat people the right way,” Vause said. “We’re going to do our jobs professionally, hold ourselves accountable, and approach every situation with fairness and compassion. That’s what this community deserves.”
Looking ahead, Chief Vause plans to focus on strengthening the department from within—supporting officers, improving recruitment and retention, and continuing to modernize operations—while also staying connected and visible in the community.
“You’ll see us out there,” he said. “Not just responding to calls, but being present, building relationships, and being part of this community.”
For Vause, leading the Selma Police Department is both a professional milestone and a personal commitment.
“This town has given a lot to me,” he said. “Now it’s my turn to give back—to lead, to serve, and to do everything I can to help keep Selma safe and strong.”
Vause replaces former Chief Jamie Hughes who retired on April 1, 2026.
