Man Hit, Killed After Vehicle Breaks Down On U.S. 70

WILSON’S MILLS – A man was struck and killed late Friday while attempting to cross U.S. 70 near Wilson’s Mills Road, according to the Wilson’s Mills Police Department.

The crash occurred around 11:49 p.m. Police said the driver of a 2005 Toyota Camry was traveling westbound on U.S. 70 and preparing to exit onto Wilson’s Mills Road when the pedestrian stepped into the travel lane and was hit.

The driver told officers he initially believed he had struck a deer and immediately called 911. Responding officers found the victim face down in the roadway and unresponsive. Wilson’s Mills Fire Department and Johnston County EMS attempted lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.

A woman who had been with the victim was identified at the scene but left before investigators could interview her. Police said they spoke with her briefly and learned she and the victim had been traveling eastbound on U.S. 70 when their vehicle got a flat tire. The car, found on the eastbound shoulder with its hazard lights flashing, was left behind as the man went on foot to seek help at a nearby convenience store.

Investigators believe he was attempting to cross the westbound lanes when he was struck. The State Highway Patrol assisted Wilson’s Mills police with measurements and reconstruction.

Police said the driver showed no signs of impairment and speed did not appear to be a factor.

“This appears to have been a tragic accident in an area known for poor lighting. Several years ago there was a similar pedestrian fatality in the same area,” Police Chief A.Z. Williams said.

No charges are expected.

  1. Check her phone Data. She was probably on the phone. When I have hit a deer, I know da*n well what I hit unless I wasn’t paying attention to the road.

  2. It’s too dark in that area ! Dot needs to put lights in the area and under that bridge! This could have saved his life !

    • Yes DOT does need to add lights there and the town has requested lights numerous times and they say it doesn’t meet “traffic count requirements.” And the town just cannot afford to do it on its own at a cost of $25million!
