Four Oaks Police are investigating whether a mechanical issue may have caused a single car accident on Highway 301 near the Highway 701- Interstate 95 interchange Thursday afternoon.
Around 1:35pm, a white Chevy SUV was traveling northbound on Highway 301 approaching a bridge over the railroad tracks when a tire on the vehicle began violently shaking. The driver, 75 year-old Dixie Barbour of Four Oaks, lost control of her SUV which slammed into the end of a guardrail. A witness reported seeing the SUV traveling straight then suddenly veer off the roadway and crash.
Police Chief Stephen Anderson said a mechanical issue may have contributed to the crash. An EMS crew treated Mrs. Barbour at the scene for minor injuries before she was transported by her husband to the hospital to be evaluated.
Chief Anderson said no charges would be filed.
A section of Highway 301 between Thunder Road and I-95 was briefly closed until the scene was cleared.
