Charles Lester Snipes

Charles Lester “Chuck” Snipes passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026.
Chuck was born on August 5, 1940, in Smithfield, North Carolina, to William Thel Snipes and Ethel Snipes. In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his first wife, Diane; his son, Adam; his brother, William Thel “Skeeter” Snipes Jr.; and his sister, Harriotte Ennis. He graduated from Selma High School in 1958 and attended Campbell College before moving to Washington, D.C., where he began a career in the printing industry that spanned more than 50 years. In 1977, he returned to Selma to be closer to his parents and embrace a slower pace of life, where he remained deeply connected to his roots.
Chuck was married to his first wife, Diana “Diane,” for 48 years. Following her passing, he married Joyce in August 2014, and they shared many meaningful years together.
He was affectionately known as “Poppy” by his family and was a devoted Duke basketball fan who rarely missed a game. He had a lifelong passion for baseball cards, highlighted by a complete 1958 Topps set. In later years, his son, Greg, continues to add to the collection, carrying on a shared tradition. He also enjoyed the music of the Kingston Trio.
Chuck was committed to his community, serving many years in the Lions Club and being recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow. He also sang in his church choir and the Johnston Chorale and coached youth sports, impacting many young lives.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM at Pine Level Missionary Baptist Church, 110 S. Peedin Avenue, Pine Level, North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Snipes; his son, Greg Snipes and wife Kim; his grandsons, Will Snipes and Merri, and Alec Snipes and Jaycee; his granddaughters, Christina and Abigail; his future great-grandson, Carter, expected in May, son of Will and Merri; his sister-in-law, Patsy and her husband Jack; his special cousin, Bonnie Capps; and many nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the loving care provided by Joyce in Chuck’s later years. Through their marriage, Chuck was welcomed into an extended family including Stephen (Kim), Bryan (Noelle), and Heather (Brian), along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
