James Charles Woodard, Jr.

James Charles Woodard, Jr.

Commander James Charles Woodard, Jr. died on February 4, 2026, in Raleigh, NC, at Rex Hospital.

Born on January 28, 1943, Jim was educated at Selma School before continuing his studies at The Citadel and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the age of twelve, he delivered the N&O all over Selma on his bicycle and continued a life of structured responsibility until his death. Jim served his country with distinction as a pilot in the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War and retiring after 20 years of dedicated service.

Upon his return to Johnston County in 1985, Jim worked at First Citizens Bank and later founded Woodard Appraisals, Inc., a business that continues to thrive in the Triangle area under the leadership of his son, James Kirby. His professional life was marked by integrity and commitment to excellence, never seeking credit, just doing what was right and decent.

Jim was deeply devoted to his family and led with courage, accountability, and love. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine Price Woodard (Lanie); son Kirby (Lisa) Woodard and grandchildren Wyatt and Violet; daughter Caroline Woodard Cook and grandchildren Jimmy, Louisa, and Frances; and sister Jane Woodard, all of whom reside in Fuquay Varina. He was predeceased by his parents, Frances and Jimmy Woodard of Selma, NC.

Jim was shaped by his early years at Edgerton Memorial United Methodist Church in Selma and later served on the vestry at both St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Smithfield and Trinity Episcopal Church in Fuquay Varina. A highlight of his military career was serving as crucifer at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL.

Jim found joy in time spent with Lanie, beach trips with his children and grandchildren, regular workouts at the gym, spirited discussions with fellow Democrats and Quiet Bird Men, and cheering for the Tar Heels and NY Yankees, whom he discovered on AM radio in the fifties. Known affectionately as “Big Jim” and “Biggie,” he was a dutiful leader and a loyal friend whose presence will be deeply missed.

He will be committed to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Selma at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 13, 2026. After the service family invites friends to the Selma Civic Center for refreshment and fellowship.

To honor his memory, donations may be made to The Boys and Girls Club of Johnston County.

May the memory of his generous spirit inspire us all.
