John William Hayes, 88, of Newton Grove, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on February 28, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 11, 1937, in Wayne County, North Carolina, to the late William Archie and Essie Hayes.
John was a devoted husband to Janet Taylor Hayes for 69 years, and a proud father to Pattie Gail Bland (Kenneth), John Douglas Hayes, William Travis Hayes (Elaine), and Melissa Hayes Lara (Mark). He also took great joy in his role as a grandfather to 9 grandchildren – Matthew Bland (Kristy), Jeremey Bland (Pamela), Laura Stone (Skye), Heather Nunley (Michael), Jason Hayes (Shannon), Taylor Cates (Brice), Johnathan Lara (Melissa), Marcelina Huitron (Irwin), and Nicholas Lara—and in his beloved great-grandchildren: Chase Bland, Cooper Bland, Charleigh Bland, Madeline Bland, Mallory Bland, Kylie Stone, Collins Stone, Kyrie Nunley, Killian Nunley, Madison Hayes, Leighton Hayes, Tenille Hayes, Waylon Cates, and Santiago Huitron. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Weeks of Morehead City.
A man of deep faith, John was a member of Mary’s Chapel Church. He had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, serving the community of Sampson County in various roles, including as Chief of Police of Newton Grove and Major with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Department. He believed that everyone should be treated fairly and his word was his bond. He held an extra special place in his heart and felt very protective of the children and senior citizens of the community. His legacy in law enforcement was marked by his commitment to justice and the well-being of his community. John was also a proud Master Mason for over 50 years at Mill Creek Lodge in Newton Grove, where he forged lifelong friendships and upheld the values of integrity and service. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and spending time with family.
John will be remembered for his kind heart, strong work ethic, and unwavering love for his family. He was well-loved and respected by so many who knew him. His generosity, wisdom, and gentle spirit touched many lives, and he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Family visitation will be held at West and Dunn Funeral Home in Newton Grove Monday, March 3, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Mary’s Chapel Baptist Church, 2336 Keener Road, Clinton on Tuesday, March 4 at 11:00 am, followed by a graveside service with Masonic Rites at Hillcrest Cemetery in Newton Grove. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mary’s Chapel Baptist Church in Clinton, NC, or the Masonic Home For Children in Oxford, NC (mhc-oxford.org).
John’s family wishes to thank the friends, neighbors, and caregivers who supported him through his final chapters of life. A special thank you to Brooke, Yvette, and the staff of 3HC who provided compassionate care. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
