    Smithfield – Kenneth Lane, age 89, died Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Springbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation in Clayton. Born March 5, 1932, in Wayne County to the late George William and Mavin Wray Lane, he was preceded in death by two sons, Keith Lane and Kenneth Ray Lane. He was also preceded in death by his twin sister, Katherine Vail Tarlton and other siblings, William “Bill” and wife Sarah, Jacob, Durwood, Robert, Patricia Myers Dice and Beulah Jackson and husband Milford.

    Kenneth was a member of New Hope Methodist Church in Goldsboro and Fellowship Masonic Lodge # 83 in Smithfield. Following his retirement from the United States Coast Guard, serving in Vietnam, Korea and the Cuban Conflict, he worked as an engineer with Wayne Memorial Hospital and later with Johnston Memorial Hospital, where he retired as the chief engineer after 24 years.

    A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2022, in the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro.

    Surviving are his wife of 37 years Martha Tingen Lane; son, Gene Lane of White Lake; daughter, Karen Slocumb of Four Oaks; stepson, Franklin Dell Whaley of Smithfield; brother, David John Lane and wife Linda of Bellevue, TX; sister-in-law, Nancy Lane of Angier; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
