    Deceased Date: 04/19/2024

Polly Ann Hinton Messer, age 78, of Smithfield, North Carolina went to her eternal home in Heaven on Friday, April 19, 2024. She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her devotion to God and family, generosity, kindness and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Born in Kenly, NC on June 11, 1945 to Vernon Avery Hinton and Bethanie Bass, she was predeceased by her husband, David Earl Messer, her parents, stepfather Jimmie Aman, stepbrother Clayton Aman and stepsister Orva Aman Nelson. She is survived by her children Greg Messer and Sharon Messer Grady-Callon (Patrick); grandchildren Justin Grady and Becca Messer; aunts Peggy Bass Waddell and Mary Elizabeth Bass and many cousins.

Polly graduated from Hobbton High School and soon married the love of her life, David. She was a devout and loving wife and caregiver until his death a week before their 49th anniversary (she put up with the fact that David loved celebrating other people’s birthdays and anniversaries but hated being the center of attention for his own).

She worked for Fieldcrest Cannon for forty-one years and for Johnston County Public School System for another sixteen years. Polly was a member of Lanwood Chapel Free Will Baptist Church for sixty years, during which she served as treasurer, Sunday school teacher, member of ladies’ auxiliary and wherever else she was needed. To be closer to home, she moved her membership to Yelverton Grove Free Will Baptist Church in 2023.

Polly was a huge animal lover whether it was dogs, chickens, or goats, and enjoyed gardening and working in the yard.
