Frances Hughes Medlin

    Frances Hughes Medlin, age 82, of Chapel Hill and formerly of Selma passed away on April 26, 2017 at Oak Hill Living Center, Angier, NC. She was diagnosed with colon cancer late 2016.
    Frances was born in Rocky Mount, NC to Preston and Irma Sue Israel Hughes. At age 2 weeks, she was adopted by her paternal grandparents, the late William Kirby and Maggie Hughes of Selma. Frances was married to Ernest Bernard Medlin, who predeceased her on May 2, 2008. They were married on July 4, 1953.
    Surviving her are two sons, Eddie Medlin (Laura) of Mebane and Bobby Medlin (Kellie) of Holly Springs and one daughter, Susan Longiotti of Chapel Hill and son-in-law, Sam Longiotti of Chapel Hill. Also surviving are four granddaughters, Nicole Longiotti Farmer and husband, Brian Farmer of Carrboro, Meghan Longiotti Horne and husband, Justin Horne of Hillsborough and Vittoria Longiotti Ciampa and husband, Mike Ciampa of Chapel Hill and Emily Medlin of Greenville, NC and one grandson, Andrew Medlin of Raleigh. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Grace, Emma, and Joseph Farmer, Mason Horne, and Olive and Coco Ciampa.
    Frances was preceded in death by her three brothers, Paul Hughes, Robert Hughes, and Charlie Hughes and three sisters, Inez Hughes Taylor, Mildred Hamilton and Jeanette Quincy. She leaves one surviving brother, Linwood Hughes of Rocky Mount.
    Frances was employed by Creech Drug Company in Selma for many years until she and her husband moved to be near their children in Chapel Hill. She worked at The Siena Hotel in Chapel Hill with her sister, Millie for several years and her time there was more of a joy than work. In her later years, she took up canvas oil painting as a hobby. She loved art and her incredible artistic skills are evident in the many beautiful oil paintings she did.
    A funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with burial immediately after the service at Selma Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. just prior to the service.
