Officials Warn Of Fake Traffic Notice Text Scam

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. – Authorities are warning residents about a widespread scam circulating by text message that falsely claims recipients owe money for a traffic or toll violation.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said several residents reported receiving a flyer-style message in recent days labeled “Final Notice — Court Enforcement Action.” The notice appears to come from a North Carolina court and threatens penalties such as fines, license suspension and court action.

Officials say the message is fraudulent.

The scam urges recipients to scan a QR code to pay an alleged unpaid balance. Law enforcement emphasized that the notice is not legitimate and warned residents not to click links or scan any codes included in the message.

“This is a scam,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, noting that the messages are being sent by text and are designed to create urgency and fear.

Authorities said real court notices are not delivered by unsolicited text messages with QR codes demanding immediate payment.

Residents are encouraged to warn friends and family members, especially those who may be more vulnerable to scams.

How the scam works
The message mimics an official government notice, using formal language and threats of legal consequences. It attempts to pressure recipients into acting quickly by scanning a QR code, which may lead to fraudulent payment sites or attempts to steal personal information.

Safety tips from authorities:

  • Do not scan QR codes from unsolicited messages
  • Do not click unknown links or provide personal information
  • Verify any alleged violation directly through official government websites or by calling local offices
  • Be cautious of messages that create urgency or threaten immediate legal action
  • Report suspicious messages to local law enforcement

Officials say anyone who receives the message should delete it. Those who may have already interacted with the scam are urged to monitor financial accounts and consider contacting their bank.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate and reminds the public that awareness is the best defense against scams.
