PINE LEVEL – The driver of a pickup truck, returning from a fishing trip at the coast, reportedly fell asleep at the wheel while westbound in the 3200 block of US 70 and drove deep into the Ignite Bible Fellowship Church in Pine Level, early Sunday.

Looking at his badly damaged church building Pastor Gary Killebrew said, “We’re grateful and praise the Lord that the guy walked away from it.”

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the 1:30 a.m. accident.

Pine Level Fire responded to the scene along with a representative from Johnston County Building Inspections.

A North Carolina Department of Transportation crew was also called to replace several road signs, which were torn down by the crashing truck.
