Police Digging Into Cause Of Fiber Optic Cable Cut

SMITHFIELD – Police are investigating the cause of a fiber optic cable cut that disrupted service to a large area.

Spectrum notified Smithfield Police of a cable cut on Highway 210 near W. Market Street (US 70) on April 5. The damage is believed to have occurred around 5:15am.

Police said Spectrum representatives indicated the cable may have been intentionally severed. Officials said about 100 ft of fiber option cable had to be replaced at a cost of approximately $250,000.

The vandalism disrupted cable service to portions of Smithfield and western Johnston County, officials said.
