Proclamation, Key To City Honor Michael Scott’s Years Of Service

SMITHFIELD — Smithfield Town Manager Michael L. Scott will retire effective Feb. 1, 2026, concluding more than 16 years of service to the town as both police chief and town manager.
Scott was recognized during his final Town Council meeting on Jan. 20, when Mayor Andy Moore and council members honored him with a proclamation and an honorary key to the city.
Scott joined the Town of Smithfield in October 2009 as chief of police, continuing a three-generation family legacy in law enforcement. He was appointed town manager in 2016 and went on to become a central figure in town leadership.

During his tenure as town manager, Smithfield maintained one of its lowest debt ratios in recent history and secured record grant funding, including nearly $8 million in federal grants and almost $19 million in state awards.
Town leaders praised Scott for his integrity, professionalism and dedication to public service, as well as his earlier career in public safety marked by acts of bravery and compassion.
