Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield Launches “Color Our World” Summer Reading Program

SMITHFIELD – The Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield has announced the launch of its 2025 Summer Reading Program with the theme of “Color Our World,” officially kicking off on Monday, June 2nd. This year’s theme invites participants to think outside the lines and express their creativity through art, while encouraging the joy of reading.

As in the past, the library will be offering families in our community the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). CSLP is a consortium of state libraries and public library systems working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children, teens, adults, and families.

This year’s programs will include:

● A reading/activity log that readers use at home to track their progress toward an age-appropriate reading goal, earning incentives and prizes for participation, such as LEGO sets, an Amazon Kindle, arts and crafts supplies, and more.

● Activities and events happening at the library or available as take-home kits in support of the theme. These include storytimes, active play/music/movement activities, crafts, fiber arts, book clubs, gardening classes, special presenters, performances, game nights, and more.

All programs and activities will take place at The Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield at 305 East Market Street in Downtown Smithfield. Library activities are free and offered to children (ages 0-12), teens (ages 13-18), and adults (ages 18 and up).

Visit the library’s summer reading webpage to explore events, get all of the details about reading challenges, and access printable calendars.

  1. Public libraries and access to books should always be a right every human has – even the online access in wonderful for those who cannot go in person to their local library.
