DUNN – A road rage incident that started when a driver cut in front of another in Smithfield escalated to a food fight before ending in a shooting in Dunn Friday night.

Officers say an angry driver, described as a shirtless white man in his mid- to late-20s, threw Pepperidge Farm Goldfish snacks at people in a blue 2006 Chevrolet Impala after they cut him off.

Then, police say he pulled a shotgun on the Impala’s occupants, firing into the car around 10:25 p.m. at the intersection of West Cumberland Street and South Ellis Avenue. Two men were injured in the Impala at the scene, according to Dunn police.

Officers were still looking for the shooter Monday. Police say he was driving a silver Nissan Exterra with dark tinted windows and fled the scene, heading north.

Twenty-four-year-old James Jackson and 22-year-old Adam Jackson were injured by the shotgun blast. Their wounds were not considered life threatening injuries. A third occupant of the Impala was Joseph Snow, 18. He was not injured.

Dunn Police Patrol Sgt. Kelvin C. Barbour took the initial report on the shooting. The investigation was turned over to Criminal Investigative Sgt. Matthew Matos.

The investigation remains active.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Sgt. Matos with the Criminal Investigative Division of Dunn Police Department at 910-892-2399, or Dunn Crimestoppers at 910-892-2222.

  1. Lessons to be learned: Drive safely and do not cut people off on the highway. Control your temper and do not escalate the situation. In other words, treat people as you would like to be treated.

  2. Is this the “culture” that so many feel is threatened by all of us “carpetbaggers” moving here?

      • Yep. Many are moving into the area with their arrogance and righteousness after ruining their northern state with liberalism.

        • I’m no liberal. Neither do I appreciate southern prejudice against “carpetbaggers” who open businesses and take advantage of opportunity in a more conservative state. I know southerners are friendly to our faces but rarely make distinctions between New England liberals who want to turn the South into a Woke Utopia and those of us who appreciate having Middle Eastern or Indian restaurants to choose from. Or who appreciate economic stimulation and affluence transforming run down rural backwaters into places that people actually enjoy spending time.

I remember when I first moved down here almost 20 years ago. I was talking to a local Northern entrepreneur who opened a small bakery shop. He was telling me how vociferous the opposition was from the “old money” and Good Ol Boy network in town about having some fancy Yankee business opening on their main street. That’s the kind of backward, ignorant attitude northerners shake their heads at.

  3. Wait what? Wtf am I reading here and what this world coming too is freaking scary!!! Just sad!

  4. Hmmmm, looks like we need to ban Pepperidge farm goldfish. PEPPERIDGE FARM VIOLENCE.
