Search For New Police Chief Narrows

The field of applicants for a new police chief has been narrowed.

Fourteen people applied for the Smithfield police chiefs position after former chief Michael Scott was hired as the town manager onMay 3rd.

The number was narrowed to 7 last month. After sending questionnaires to the seven candidates, the field has now been narrowed to four.

Scott said a telephone interview will be held later this month with the remaining candidates. A timeline when a new chief will be named was not announced.

Police Captain Keith Powell has been serving as interim police chief since Scott’s appointment to town manager.
