Smithfield Man Killed In Traffic Collision
A Smithfield man was killed in a traffic accident on Swift Creek Road at Rock Pillar Road near the Johnston County Airport. The 5:22pm Sunday collision involved a moped and Ford SUV.
According to the State Highway Patrol, 47 year-old Andrew Martin Epstein of Highway 70 Business West, Smithfield was operating a 2015 moped on Rock Pillar Road and had stopped for a stop sign at Swift Creek Road. Epstein began to turn left onto Swift Creek Road but pulled directly into the path of a 2013 Ford SUV traveling westbound on Swift Creek Road. Both the moped and SUV ran off the roadway after the collision.
Epstein died as a result of his injuries. The 16 year-old driver of the SUV was not injured.
Highway Patrol First Sgt. R.B. Maynard said no charges are expected to be filed.
