Smithfield Marks 40 Years Of Ham & Yam Festival

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – Smithfield’s signature spring event is set to return as the Ham & Yam Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary on Saturday, May 2.
The annual festival, held in downtown Smithfield, continues its tradition of highlighting local culture, agriculture, and community spirit. Organizers say this year’s milestone event will feature a full day of activities designed for all ages.
Festivities begin with a timed 5K run, followed by one of the festival’s longest-standing traditions: ham biscuits served by the Kiwanis Club, prepared with Stevens hams. Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy pig races, live entertainment across three stages, and exhibitions ranging from antique tractors to wood-carving demonstrations.
A large car show hosted by the Southland Car Club is also expected to draw visitors, alongside food vendors and a sweetpotato-focused cooking expo. The North Carolina Pork Council will host a sanctioned whole hog cooking competition as part of the day’s lineup.
The celebration concludes with a free concert at 7 p.m. at the Neuse River Amphitheater, featuring the band Sister Hazel.
