Smithfield Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday morning. Police were dispatched to the 800 block of Third Avenue after one person was shot.
Police Chief Keith Powell said the victim, whose name was not immediately released, was taken by ambulance to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield. Chief Powell said the victims injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
Officers did detain a person of interest in connection with the 11:30am shooting.
Chief Powell said a motive for the shooting was still under investigation. Smithfield animal control was also on the scene of the incident. JoCoReport.com Photos
