Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q Marks 40 Years In New Bern With Plans For New Restaurant
NEW BERN, N.C. — Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q broke ground Feb. 23 on a new restaurant in New Bern, marking the next chapter for a location that has served the community for four decades.
Company President Lew Starling and Vice President Junius Moore led the groundbreaking ceremony at the site, which is adjacent to the existing New Bern restaurant.
“The existing store opened in 1986 and it was remodeled in 2007. Now we are building the next generation store next door,” Mr. Moore said. “We are very proud to have been a part of the New Bern community for the past 40 years and look forward to investing in the new store for the future.”
Starling said the company is grateful for the community’s support over the years.
“We are so excited about this new store for New Bern,” Mr. Starling said. “We thank our customers for their loyal support.”
The new restaurant is expected to open in August 2026.
Smithfield’s Chicken ’N Bar-B-Q operates 38 locations across central and eastern North Carolina.

I became a big fan in 2001 and sometimes I would eat there 4 or 5 times a week. They are responsible for about my 30 additional pounds. I’m there now about twice a week. Bring it on and I’ll see somebody there.👍🏾👍🏾
