UPDATE: Hit-And-Run Driver Arrested After Fatal Crash

SAMPSON COUNTY – Authorities arrested a woman Sunday morning in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a 17-year-old girl Saturday night on U.S. 421 in Sampson County.

State troopers identified the suspect as Antoinette Worrell, 50, of Rose Hill, who was taken into custody and charged with felony hit and run, failure to report an accident, and driving while license revoked. Worrell is being held without bond at the Sampson County Jail.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m. Saturday near Josephus Road, north of Harrells. Troopers said Savannah Alice Hawkins, 17, of Rose Hill, ran into the northbound lane of U.S. 421 and was struck by a northbound passenger vehicle. Family members who witnessed the collision immediately attempted to render aid, but Hawkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said a burgundy 2011 Ford Fusion involved in the crash has now been located.
