Town Manager Michael Scott Announces Retirement

SMITHFIELD – Smithfield Town Manager Michael Scott, who has served in the position since 2016 and has been a central figure in town leadership, announced Tuesday night that he will retire effective February 1, 2026.

Scott submitted his retirement letter to Mayor Andy Moore and members of the Smithfield Town Council prior to the start of their regular meeting. In the letter, he reflected on his time in Smithfield and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community.

“It has been an awesome sixteen years in the Town of Smithfield,” he wrote. “I would like to thank the Council for the opportunity to have been a part of Smithfield’s history and service efforts during this time.”

He also praised the town’s workforce and leadership, noting that their experience and stability will help ensure Smithfield’s continued success.

“I believe the Town currently has in place a great group of employees, department heads and a seasoned leadership structure which includes the Council, Mayor, and Assistant Manager. With this group remaining in place, Smithfield can only continue all the positive achievements it has made during the last one and a half decades,” he said.

Scott also offered personal thanks to the community that has supported him and his family.

“I want first and foremost to thank the people of Smithfield for welcoming my wife and I, and later, our family, into the community and accepting us as one of Smithfield’s own. It has been a true honor to have been an integral part of this community during this time.”

Michael Scott was hired in October 2009 as Smithfield’s police chief before becoming town manager seven years later. He began his career in public service as a police officer in Muscatine, Iowa in 1984.

  1. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Scott are special people, and being from the MidWest, they brought with them their good Midwestern values. I like both of them. They go to funerals, such as for Genie Grimes and Margo Allsbrook. They care about the community. I am sure that they will both make it to the pearly gates of Heaven one day. God blessed them on their journey and their contributions to the U.S.A.

  2. And, Mr. Michael Scott and his wife always go to the EASTER Community Services in the early morning each year, too, in Smithfield, N.C. I saw them at this past year’s and they speak to everyone there.
