Two Men Indicted After Major Meth, Fentanyl Seizure In Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two men from Mexico have been indicted on federal drug trafficking charges following an investigation that led to the seizure of large quantities of crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, a firearm and more than $66,000 in alleged drug proceeds.

Martin Eduardo Hernandez Nunez, 36, and Juan Carlos Mojarro Sanchez, 38, are charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute crystal methamphetamine, distribution of crystal methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute crystal methamphetamine and fentanyl, and possession with intent to distribute crystal methamphetamine.

Federal prosecutors said both men are unlawfully present in the United States and are alleged to have ties to a Mexico-based drug trafficking organization responsible for distributing methamphetamine in the Charlotte area.

According to charging documents, investigators searched the defendants’ residence in May and recovered nearly 30 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and two kilograms of fentanyl.

Investigators also said they obtained an additional four kilograms of crystal methamphetamine during controlled drug purchases involving the defendants.

A search of a storage unit allegedly used by the men resulted in the seizure of another 30 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

Authorities also reported finding a firearm, vacuum sealers, a money counter, drug ledgers, digital scales and a large kilo press commonly used to repackage narcotics.

More than $66,000 in alleged drug proceeds was seized during the investigation.

“We are laser focused on identifying transnational criminal organizations and their operatives who smuggle deadly drugs into our communities, fueling addiction and violence,” U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson said. “We are going after these organizations at every level to stop their drugs from reaching our streets.”

Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Mark M. Zito said the case resulted in the removal of large quantities of drugs, a firearm and suspected drug proceeds from circulation.

Hernandez Nunez and Mojarro Sanchez remain in federal custody.

If convicted, each faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum of life imprisonment. Any sentence would be determined by a federal judge.
