Violent Crash Sends SUV Into Side Of Home

BENSON – Emergency crews responded to a serious two vehicle accident Saturday afternoon outside of Benson. The collision was reported around 3:30pm, at the intersection of Federal Road and Grace Road, in the Elevation community.

A blue passenger car and gray SUV were involved in a t-bone collision at the intersection. The impact forced the SUV off the roadway, where it overturned into the side of a house.

John Hyatt said he was in his kitchen when he heard a loud “boom” then felt his house shift. He ran out the back door and turned the corner to see the SUV against his home and the female driver screaming.

Hyatt said he called 911, then at the woman’s request used his phone to call her husband alerting him to the crash. Witnesses said the driver was conscious and alert but pinned inside her vehicle.

The victim was trapped in the overturned SUV approximately 30 minutes until being cut free by Elevation Fire personnel, who carefully removed a portion of the roof. She was transported to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Two people in the blue car were evaluated at the scene by Johnston County EMS but declined transport to the hospital. The impact was so violent, the engine was ripped out of the car, landing approximately 30 feet away.

Johnston County Building Inspections deemed the garage area of Mr. Hyatt’s home unsafe. Hyatt said his boat inside the garage was damaged in the crash.

The State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

The intersection reopened to traffic around 5:00pm.

    • oh no they don’t….I have several I have to drive thru and MOST people do not know the rules for a 4 way stop sign….if people would just get off their phones and pay attention OR a stop light was put in place it would help. let’s face it folks, JOCO is not a rural county anymore, except down around the Bentonville area.
