Wayne County Sheriff Warns Of Arrest Warrant, Gift Card Scams
WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent increase in scams involving callers who pose as law enforcement officers and demand money to clear supposed arrest warrants.
Authorities said victims have been told to withdraw large amounts of money from their bank accounts and purchase gift cards for the scammers.
In other cases, callers have claimed an arrest warrant was issued in the victim’s name and instructed the person to send money through payment apps to avoid arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office said any demand to purchase gift cards to resolve an arrest warrant should immediately raise suspicion.
Residents are also urged to be cautious of unexpected phone calls, text messages or electronic messages requesting money or personal information.
Anyone receiving a suspicious call should hang up and independently contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office or another law enforcement agency using a verified phone number.
Residents who have already sent money or provided financial information are encouraged to contact their bank or payment provider immediately and report the incident to law enforcement.
