Benson Woman Critically Injured In Early Morning Shooting

A 35 year-old Benson woman was shot and critically injured this morning (Tuesday).   The shooting was reported at 1:25 AM on Jada Allen Road at the Johnston-Harnett County line.

The victim, Cynthia Lemus Gonzalez of Highway 242 South, Benson, was at a residence on Jada Allen Road when she was shot by a male acquaintance.  Gonzalez was rushed by ambulance to Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn then transferred to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh where she underwent surgery.   She was reported to be in critical condition Tuesday morning.

Lt. Don Pate with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said the male acquaintance was still on the scene when officers arrived.  Lt. Pate said the shooting was not domestic related. The man spoke with investigators about the incident and was released.   Authorities declined to release specific details about what led up to the shooting.  Officers have not made a decision on possible criminal charges pending further investigation.  The name of the man who reportedly shot Gonzalez was not released.
