Selma To Host Child Passenger Safety Check During Statewide Campaign

Free Child Car Seat Checks Set For Sept. 26 In Selma

SELMA, N.C. – Parents and caregivers will have an opportunity to make sure their children’s car seats are installed and being used correctly.

A free child passenger safety seat-checking event will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Target, 551 St. Mark Ave. in Selma.

The event is part of North Carolina’s observance of Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 21-27, and will coincide with Seat Check Saturday events being held across the state.

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to inspect car seats, answer questions and help parents and caregivers make sure children are properly restrained.

State officials are encouraging families to have their seats checked if they recently purchased a new car seat, moved a child into a different type of restraint, are preparing for a child’s next stage of growth or simply are unsure whether a seat is installed properly.

The Selma event is one of more than a dozen Seat Check Saturday events planned across North Carolina on Sept. 26.

As part of this year’s campaign, child safety seat manufacturer Cybex is donating more than $20,000 worth of car seats for distribution through child passenger safety events across the state.

The N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal, Safe Kids North Carolina, Governor’s Highway Safety Program and other state and local safety partners are coordinating the weeklong campaign.

State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor said the goal is to make child passenger safety information and assistance readily available to families.

“Seeing the forces involved in even a relatively low-speed crash can change the way people think about child passenger safety,” Taylor said. “Our goal is to make child passenger safety practical and accessible for every family.”

The statewide campaign begins Monday, Sept. 21 in Greenville and continues through Sept. 27.
