Car Bursts Into Flames After Striking Steel Spool

SELMA – Around 8:00pm Wednesday, a Buffalo Road driver on her way home from a funeral was suddenly struck head-on by a large steel spool loaded with 2 inch PVC pipe, used for underground utilities. The spool had come loose from its carrier being towed by a 19 year-old driver heading south towards Selma.

The spool loaded with tubing smashed the SUV’s windshield and rolled over the top of the car as the driver fought to control the vehicle, which had caught fire after the collision.

Passersby quickly rushed to the driver’s aid and helped her get out of the burning car, which the driver said “blew up” after she got out.  The 10-year old Subaru was destroyed.  The driver was uninjured.

The driver of the pickup truck was cited for failure to secure a load and driving without an operators license.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the accident which occurred in the 6000 block of Buffalo Road.

Selma Fire Department firefighters extinguished the fire and directed traffic.  Buffal Road was completely shut down for about an hour.
