District Attorney Jason Waller Files For Full Term

JOHNSTON COUNTY – On December 1, Johnston County District Attorney Jason Waller filed his notice of candidacy as a Republican to be on the ballot in 2026 for a full term as District Attorney after being appointed to the position in July following the retirement of former District Attorney Susan Doyle.
Waller brings over 19 years of prosecutorial experience to the role, including over seven years as the Senior Assistant District with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office prior to taking over as District Attorney.
Throughout his career, District Attorney Waller has worked to ensure public safety, promote efficiency in the courtroom, and foster relationships with citizens, law enforcement, and other government agencies. During his first months in office, Waller has implemented several policies and procedures to help facilitate those objectives.
He established a Dangerous Offenders Task Force to identify and prosecute violent criminals that pose a danger to the community. He is exploring all available collaborative options to provide support for young victims of sexual abuse and violent crimes throughout the prosecution process and after. Waller also continues to directly supervise status conferences for homicide and custody cases to help expedite the disposition of the county’s most serious matters.
One of Waller’s first priorities as DA was to meet with local law enforcement leaders to strengthen existing relationships and focus on strategies to help promote public safety and productivity during the court process.
“I am honored and proud to be the District Attorney of Johnston County. Each day in this role has provided me with different ideas and perspectives on how I can best serve Johnston County in a full term. I am very thankful for the support I have received from the public, law enforcement, local agencies, and members of the bar. This support has helped my office maintain the high standards the county deserves during this transition period. I am committed to aggressively prosecuting violent offenders, sexual predators, drug traffickers, habitual offenders; and those that threaten everyone’s safety on our roads by driving while impaired and/or fleeing from law enforcement.”
Waller is a former assistant district attorney in Johnston and Wake Counties. Over the last two decades he has prosecuted a wide range of serious felony cases, from vehicular homicides and armed robberies to first-degree and capital murder trials.
He is a native of Beulaville in Duplin County and resides in Clayton with his wife, Meredith, and three children. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 2003 and 2006. In 2016, he was named North Carolina MADD Prosecutor of the Year for his commitment to justice and public safety.
“Johnston County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state and that brings new challenges to the office. I believe I have the experience and vision necessary to lead a team of prosecutors who are tough, but fair, and driven by a desire to seek justice and keep our citizens safe.”
District Attorney Waller will be on the Republican Party ballot in the March 3, 2026, Primary Election.
