Driver Carjacked After Johnston County Crash

SMITHFIELD – A 77 year-old driver was reportedly carjacked after being involved in a traffic accident. It happened Sunday night, May 7 on Interstate 95 in Johnston County.

An elderly Pennsylvania man was traveling on the interstate in his Nissan Altima when he was struck by a white pickup. The driver followed the pickup and waved him down. Both drivers stopped on the southbound off ramp at US 70 in Smithfield.

Smithfield Police said the victim exited his Nissan and approached the driver of the pickup where an argument ensued. The driver of the pickup, identified as Dwayne Dennis Rivers, age 27, of Fayetteville, NC, reportedly shoved the victim and drove off in the Nissan.

Police responded and located the Nissan abandoned a few miles away near the Brogden Road exit.

Rivers was identified as the suspect and later turned himself in at the Smithfield Police Department. Rivers was charged with common law robbery and given a $25,000 bond.

The Highway Patrol responded and investigated the vehicle accident on I-95 that led to the carjacking.
