An employee at a Smithfield restaurant was shot while at work. The shooting was reported at 1:46pm Tuesday at San Marcos Mexican Restaurant at 275 N. Equity Drive.
Police said the employee forgot to remove a 9mm handgun from his pocket after arriving at work. The gun later discharged while in his pocket. The bullet struck him in the leg.
Johnston County EMS transported the victim to the hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening wound. No one else was injured.
On Wednesday, Smithfield Police told JoCoReport the shooting has been ruled accidental, however the incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not said if the victim will face any type of charges.
