Five Sewage Spills Reported Totaling 142,000 Gallons

Tuesday afternoon, the Johnston County Public Utilities Department reported five separate sewage spills overnight due to excessive rainfall in portions of Johnston County.

Rainwater infiltration into the wastewater collection system caused discharges at the following locations:

  • Approximately 78,000 gallons in the vicinity of 400 Fawnbrook Drive, Four Oaks discharged into a tributary to Holts Lake.
  • Approximately 15,000 gallons in the vicinity of 96 Hillsboro Road, Four Oaks discharged into Meadow Branch a tributary to Black Creek.
  • Approximately 37,500 gallons in the vicinity of 560 Wilkins Road, Four Oaks discharged into Black Creek.
  • Approximately 10,000 gallons in the vicinity of 747 Devils Racetrack Road, Four Oaks discharged into an unnamed tributary to the Neuse River.
  • Approximately 1,500 gallons in the vicinity of 300 Royalty Court, Garner discharged into Buffalo Creek.

Combined, 142,000 gallons of sewage spilled.  The Division of Water Resources was notified of the events on September 1, 2020 and is reviewing the matter.  In a news release, the County stated that some individuals reported up to 14 inches of rain had fallen in the Four Oaks area.
